About Tampa Bay Area

Those who think of central Florida's Gulf Coast chiefly as a seaside retirement haven will likely be surprised when they visit Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater, collectively known as Tampa Bay. In reality, historical preservation and a good measure of civic pride have contributed to a cultural richness that makes the Tampa Bay area comparable in Florida only to Miami. Consider vibrant, historic Ybor City, birthplace of Tampa's cigar industry and now its hot-hot-hot Latin-infused nightspot. Or St. Petersburg's eclectic sextet of art and history museums showing everything from Salavador Dali's thought-provoking paintings to sobering images of the Holocaust. Busch Gardens, Tampa's premier, African-motif theme park, and top-notch attractions like the Florida Aquarium and the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI, for short) inspire adults and children to explore new horizons together while having loads of fun.

Florida's Sun Coast is aptly named. There are 35 miles of dazzling, white sand along the gulf side of the barrier islands that lie a short distance off the Pinellas Peninsula, and experts consistently rank resortlike Clearwater Beach and the undeveloped shores of Fort De Soto Park and Caladesi Island among the best beaches in the nation. Although winter temperatures may not be ideal for swimmers and sunbathers, recreation such as sailing, fishing, shelling and sightseeing by boat provide year-round pleasure in a string of beach communities from Tarpon Springs south to St. Pete Beach. Tampa Bay is the perfect starting point for a driving excursion down Florida's scenic west coast to Bradenton, Sarasota, Sanibel and Fort Myers.
